The impact of COVID-19  on the world has been unprecedented. The virus has shaken up consumer and business behaviour worldwide. Whether it is day-to-day operation, client interaction or workspace culture, going “contactless” has become an essential part of our life now.

The government has advised businesses to observe social distancing rules for the foreseeable future, recommending measures ranging from store layout reviews and separation screens to limiting in-store customer numbers and even suspending some services. Those queues normally reserved for Apple stores the night before a new iPhone launch, could be a permanent fixture outside some stores as they struggle to cope with social distancing norms.

How industries have been tackling COVID-19

QR codes seem to have made a comeback

In a world where consumers prefer to avoid touching shared surfaces, QR codes present an interesting solution for enterprises. QR codes didn’t initially gain traction in most parts of the world. However, we’re seeing QR codes being used as a touchless alternative at KFC restaurants in China. Some restaurants have also begun to implement this more sanitary option that could potentially be cheaper than printing menus

QR codes can easily turn a smartphone into a mobile menu. This in turn, can be integrated with ordering systems, eliminating the need for wait staff to place orders and with relatively little effort. Self-service can further reduce transmission of the virus.

Restaurants functioning more contactless than ever

Amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic,  major food delivery apps like Zomato and Swiggy now have gradually increased sales numbers after witnessing a sharp decline since the last week of March.  The rising dependence on home deliveries has definitely helped curb the spread of the virus and also provided local businesses and delivery partners with much-needed income. Restaurant takeaway is another option that many hungry folks have embraced as an alternative to in-restaurant dining.

A new way to pay

For some businesses, COVID-19 may have been an opportunity , the pandemic has seemingly sped up the use of online payment portals like never before. Especially in developing markets like India where a vast majority of transactions take place by cash. India had already doubled up on electronic payment post demonetization. But now it seems to be on an overdrive. In the past three weeks over 42% of Indians have used digital payment mode multiple times as compared to the pre lockdown period.

In addition to the surge in the number of transactions through digital payment platforms, the number of downloads of such platforms have also almost doubled indicating wider acceptance among the masses.

Flattening the curve: Key issues that matter in the workplace

Office scapes and factory floors are one of the most high-risk areas for the spread of COVID-19. With hundreds of people sharing closed workspaces and common equipment, there is bound to be some transmission of the virus. Employers need to ensure the highest degree of precautions, not only for the well being of their employees but also the output of the company.

Here are some things you as an employer can do to minimise and contain spread of the virus at your workplace.

  1. Make your organization “Social Distancing” friendly

Maintaining social distancing in limited spaces of your organization may seem impossible. But with a little extra planning and the right tools, you can transform your organization into a safe and secure space with limited chances of virus transmission. This starts with identifying all the places that could be a hotspot for transmission and taking necessary precautions to handle them. Entrances and exits, break rooms and canteens require the most attention. Hand sanitizers need to be installed and maintained at such locations. Sanitizing of surfaces will need to be done frequently, depending on the nature of the site.

  1. Ensure everyone is on board

The most challenging aspect here is that each and everyone in the organization should be convinced about the importance of social distancing. It could take just one employee who doesn’t understand the severity of the issue to start a full blown transmission. Employees need to be repeatedly reminded to take necessary precautions as they go about their daily jobs. Visible posters and notices placed strategically around the office will help in keeping safety norms on top of their minds. Motivating formal and informal pear leaders in the organization to inculcate the culture of social distancing will also help to a great extent.

  1. Track the movement of employees as much as possible

A key factor in controlling the spread of the Covid-19 virus is the ability to identify all the possible carriers of the virus and take necessary actions. This can be achieved by contact-tracing of known positive patients. Several tools and apps enable you to find out all the people the patient came in contact with since contracting the virus, and can then be quarantined to prevent further transmission. In India, the Arogya Sethu app  has been vigorously endorsed by the government.

  1. Handling meetings and external visitors the right way in a post COVID-19 world

Meetings and external visitors are an essential part of a normal day in an organization. But they also carry the highest risk of possible contraction of the virus. The following points should be kept in mind here:

  • Try to avoid physical meetings as much as possible and instead conduct online meetings.
  • If physical meetings cannot be avoided, include only absolutely necessary participants and maintain strict social distancing guidelines.
  • Transmission can be further mitigated by avoiding sharing of pens, documents and other objects.
  • Scheduling visitors to avoid unnecessary exposure can help to a great extent. Visitor management apps can help you to space out visitors and also organize a safe, touchless and hassle-free experience.
